Taking a "New School" Approach

I've been staying pretty much "old school" with my photography in the last year. That is, I've been doing as little editing as possible ... striving to get most of the real work done in camera instead of in photoshop.
Still, lately I've noticed a trend toward "color splash" technology...switching an image to black-and-white then returning splashes of color to certain areas of the photo. The results are so beautiful and so desirable that I finally gave in and downloaded new software yesterday.
Wow!
It's FUN and ADDICTIVE!
There's something to be said for "old school" photography but there's also A LOT to be said for all the wonderful technologies available in today's digital world!

Back in my actual "old school" days, I did this manually using a black-and-white print (usually self-printed in the darkroom), lots of little bottles of color & color remover, q-tips and cotton balls. There were also little oil color pencils you could use, but they didn't offer the same results as the bottled color. The process was tedious and time-consuming and then you still had to wait days for the color to dry. This digital color painting is so quick and simple it's almost magical, by comparison!

Tiny Dancer

Often, particularly with an active toddler, some of the cutest moments are captured apart from all the posing and backdrops. This week I was treated to the precious dance moves of this Tiny Dancer, who strutted her stuff to the musical stylings of Madonna's first album, circa 1985, during an Easter portrait session.

Of course, we did manage to get some of those posed/backdrop-y images too.

Big, Beautiful Belly

Had a fun maternity session yesterday with the daughter of a dear, old friend.
Oh my goodness, where does the time go? I can remember going on a field trip to the pumpkin patch with this lovely young lady and her classmates when she was but a tiny kindergarten tot. Now just look at her, all grown up and so very beautiful, too!

A Little Pirate

The rain cleared late Sunday afternoon just in time for a bit of puddle-splashing fun. The tot sees his galoshes as "pirate boots" so he insisted on donning full garb before heading out the door.
Fine with me. We had a jolly good time splashing about the neighborhood!

I haven't made any self-portraits in several years other than those I've self-timed with my family. My kiddo took a late afternoon nap today and, since I'd just gotten home from the salon with a fresh new 'do, I took advantage of the late afternoon sunlight splashing on my living room wall and mugged for the camera for a few frames.
It was such fun!
I love, love, love the way the sun dances around my living room like that!

Last spring, when I first decided to launch Tanjie Nash Photography, the single most-asked question I got was "Are you going to do weddings?"
While I had at the ready an ample portfolio of child portraiture, I did not have any real experience to speak of in shooting weddings. I was reluctant, then, to advertise myself as a wedding photographer without any work examples available.
Thanks to Eve & Brian, who invited me to capture their wedding images back in December.
I had great fun being a part of their special day and I'm already looking forward to a couple other ceremonies I'll be sharing in this spring and summer!

Seeing Things in a Whole New Light

When I first decided to hang my proverbial shingle, my plan was to stick with natural light photography and not bother with the technicalities and expense of studio lighting. However, a few months ago a friend was shutting down her own photo biz and made me an offer I couldn't refuse on an Alien Bees lighting set-up.
Because I enjoy natural light photography so much and feel that natural light makes the most beautiful portraits, I was in no real hurry to try my new lights out after I bought them. Finally, though, I set them up with my backdrop and convinced Nash to model for me. We had such fun! And inside of 20 minutes (including one wardrobe change) I scored quite a treasure trove of precious images of my little sweetheart!
What fun!

Friends & Family

Friends & Family day last Saturday was such great fun!
First, I had the honor of taking a few photos of my husband's new little cousin, Colt, but I haven't delivered his photos to his Mommy & Daddy yet, so I'll post those later.
Next, I had a visit from Rachel, the daughter of a sweet and wonderful friend from way back when. Rachel's incredible blue eyes and her precious smile made for a wonderful session.

Colson, the adorable little son of my long-time friends, Cathy & Jamie, was my third subject of the day. He had such fun discovering my own little boy's toys that we had to practically pry him away for photos. He did a great job, though. Quite the little model, that one!

My cousin Brandi and her husband, Jay, brought their son, Will, for portraits and as long as the gang was all here, we shot a family portrait as well.

Finally, my cousin Tony's wife, Chrissy, brought Karlie, Anna, Cayden & Brady for a marathon photo session. What a wonderful challenge, capturing all four kids with suitable smiles in the same frame. Wow!
